We create our own holidays. Validation Day is a distant relative of Valentine’s Day, minus the commercialism. For the month leading up to Validation Day, we are all busy making cards for everyone on the island, usually collages made from any of the dozens magazines we subscribe to, with lots of blank space inside. This blank space is filled with short messages of appreciation and affection from as many members of the community as feel inspired. It is in effect a single love letter with many authors. On Validation Day itself we have a big festive dinner and everyone grows misty-eyed reading their letters for the first time. Several people i know save their past Validation Day cards as a tonic for mild depression. Land Day celebrates and commemorates our founding, and several pagan holidays are popular and theatrically adorned.

You find yourself swept up in the daily dance of sharing space and upholding the integrity of the community relationships. You also feel a sense of pride for knowing that you’re doing your best to live a sustainable lifestyle, and that brings joy. There is also the feeling of being connected – especially to nature. You walk outside and you are surrounded by giant blue butterflies, a happy pack of community dogs roaming around playing, and paths that wind through the jungle.

That’s great! I like the idea of driving golf carts everywhere. They are typically noiseless and fun. In other communities I’ve seen them use ATVs, because the terrain was more challenging, but they were so noisy. I personally think that this kind of noise disturbs wildlife.
Agree that the best communities are pretty much 90% car free and have their vehicles parked outside/at the entrance.
